1. Start with the actual column cross-section
For a rectangular or square column, cross-sectional area is width × depth. For a circular column, cross-sectional area is π × radius squared, where radius is half the entered diameter.

2. Multiply cross-section by the concrete height
Once the cross-sectional area is known, multiply it by the actual concrete height to obtain the volume of one prismatic column.

For repeated columns with identical dimensions, multiply one unrounded column volume by the quantity. Do not round each column to bags separately, because that can accumulate avoidable package-rounding error.

4. Keep the extra allowance visible
Placement loss, form tolerances, and field variation can increase purchased quantity. BuildNumbers applies the user-entered allowance only after the net project volume is known.

Imperial results can be viewed in cubic yards and cubic feet; metric results use cubic meters and liters. For bagged concrete, the final allowance-adjusted volume is divided by the selected published package yield and rounded upward once.
As a controlled arithmetic example, three 12 in × 12 in × 10 ft columns equal 30 ft³ net. With 10% allowance the order volume is 33 ft³, or 1.222 yd³. At a published 0.60 ft³ yield, that is exactly 55 complete 80 lb bags. Those dimensions are an arithmetic example, not a structural recommendation.
